Flexible stone panel for an outdoor sauna

Stone on a sauna sounds like a contradiction. Real stone is heavy — full slabs need a supporting structure that a small timber sauna simply does not have. That is why stone saunas are almost never seen in practice.

Flexible stone panel for an outdoor sauna

SlateLite solves exactly that problem: it is real natural stone, but in the form of a thin, flexible panel. Light enough to be used on an outdoor sauna, while materially it remains stone — not an imitation.

This guide explains what SlateLite is, why it bends, how it behaves outdoors, and how KUBIQ applies it on a sauna.

Step 01What SlateLite is

SlateLite is natural stone in the form of a thin, flexible panel. A thin layer of real stone is bonded to a flexible backing — the surface, texture and tone are natural stone, not a print or a decorative imitation.

Panel thickness is typically around 1.5 mm (depending on the line, roughly in the 1–2.5 mm range). It is an original German product, on the market since 2002, made through a manual multi-stage process in which a thin layer of stone is peeled from a natural slab.

Step 02Why stone that bends

Flexibility is not a trick — it changes what is actually possible with stone:

The result is that the sauna reads as a stone object, not as a wooden cabin clad in tiles.

Step 03How it behaves outdoors

The manufacturer states that SlateLite is UV-resistant, frost-resistant and waterproof, with confirmed facade use for selected lines.

One important detail: not all decors are declared for outdoor use. The manufacturer defines which stone can be used outside through a dedicated selection chart. KUBIQ solves this at the source — on a sauna we use only the manufacturer's outdoor-declared decor list, and the joints are closed with the sealer specified by the manufacturer. This eliminates unsuitable decors before the choice even reaches the client.

Step 04How KUBIQ applies SlateLite

Decor selection is a curatorial step. The client receives a stone chart with outdoor decors only and chooses the character and tone within that safe range — not from the full catalogue, where an unsuitable exterior option could be selected. The choice itself (which stone, which tone, how it fits the setting) is part of the conversation.

Installation: the panels are bonded to the KUBIQ exterior substrate with a special adhesive.

Joints: they are closed with the sealer specified by the manufacturer — applied once, during installation. The client does not renew it later.

Warranty and service life: the same approach as for other KUBIQ materials.

Step 05Appearance and character

The stone comes in a range of types — slate, mica, limestone, sandstone, marble — and in tones from dark graphite to light. The client chooses from the outdoor stone chart supplied by KUBIQ, so the range is broad, but always within exterior-declared decors.

A note on names: there is a light marble decor called “Arctic White” — this is not the same as the Lunawood *Arctic* line (grey thermowood), nor the Eclipse *Arctic* line (cold plunge line). Three different “Arctics”, three different things.

Step 06When SlateLite makes sense, and when it does not

Step 07What SlateLite is not

Stone on an outdoor sauna was long impractical because of weight. SlateLite makes it feasible — provided it is installed with the correct decor, adhesive and sealer. That is the difference between a stone sauna that lasts and one that only looks like stone in a render.

Next step

Considering a stone sauna?

Stone is one material direction. Which decor, what context and how it fits the space — that is built through conversation.

Real natural stone — a thin layer of stone bonded to a flexible backing. The surface, texture and tone are stone, not print.

Yes. KUBIQ uses only the manufacturer's outdoor-declared decors, and the joints are closed with the specified sealer during installation.

No special maintenance. The sealer on the joints is applied once, during installation — the client does not renew it. After that, cleaning with water is enough, with a brush or pressure washer if needed.

Much lighter than a full stone slab — exactly why stone on a lightweight sauna is feasible at all.

The client chooses from the outdoor stone chart provided by KUBIQ — the full range of exterior-declared decors, not one fixed look.
